Carton & Cases / End of Line
A discipline for specialists
Exposed to anything from the blazing desert sun to the Arctic chill, adhesives must perform perfectly in all climatic conditions, and bonded packages must withstand a wide range of stresses before they are opened by the consumer.
However, it is not only the requirements of the finished package that are important. No less crucial are the processing characteristics of the adhesive in the packaging machine. A hotmelt adhesive has to fulfil a whole range of conditions in its particular application situation. Rapid curing, for instance, is a must for fast packaging speeds. Even so, open time has to be sufficiently long for the machine. The adhesive also has to satisfy many more, often customer-specific requirements.
This requirement profile is highly exacting. Until recently, it could only be satisfied by using different adhesives dedicated to certain limited tasks. To solve these multiple application problems, Henkel has developed a comprehensive product range. The adhesives systems of the Technomelt line meet all the needs of product packaging.
In view of the rapid advances in technology, changing consumption habits and society’s demand for sustainable, environmentally compatible production methods, Henkel and its customers are regularly confronted with new challenges. In consultation with raw material suppliers, machine manufacturers and the packaging industry, Henkel is constantly refining the Technomelt product group so that it delivers optimum performance in all the demanded sectors.
Applications & Products
Carton & Folding Boxes
Adhesives for carton closing have to be able to work with high-speed machinery systems. The adhesive should also have excellent hot tack and quick setting times. It has to adhere to lacquered and non-lacquered surfaces. Sometimes strong heat resistance is required for warm filling processes or cold resistance for deep freeze applications.
Adhesives used for deep freeze applications must have a high cold flexibility, which includes shock frost resistance as well as long term freezer temperature resistance. These grades must also be able to run cleanly through high-speed machines. They must be adaptable for all applications from package forming all the way through to final carton sealing as well as palletizing.
Adhesives used for straw attachment have to meet many requirements of this specific application. The adhesive must be adaptable to OPP foil and PE foil. The surface of the container (treated or untreated) and the use of various inks and printing methods also have to be considered. The adhesive must be clean running with no stringing for whichever application method is used. It also must be FDA approved and sometimes have a high cold resistance.
The attachment of a re-closable, leak proof device onto beverage packs within a packaging line involves specific requirements. First, the adhesive must have the ability to adhere to the polypropylene closure and PE coated cardboard (treated or untreated) as well as to wet or printed surfaces. It must be clean running with existing machinery while accommodating changes in speed and temperature. The adhesive must cope with temperatures of 0 °C to 50 °C. It must have FDA/BGvV approval for direct food contact. Henkel has developed specialty products to meet these requirements, while at the same time being strong enough to withstand repeated opening and closing of the closure.
Adhesives used in the sift proof application provide a closure system which protects the product against the introduction of foreign materials as well as preventing the goods from leaking out of the package as it is being filled. A continuous seal provides this closure without the use of internal bags, achieving considerable savings in packaging costs. The products where this packaging concept is desirable are detergents, cereals, wheat and flavorings. The adhesive should have an excellent adhesion, machinability and show no stringing or cob webbing.
Adhesives used for tray erection must be able to withstand fast machine operating speeds in the warm ambient temperatures at the production site. High heat resistance is also needed especially during the summer months, as well as the capability to withstand various climatic conditions in export markets.
The adhesive used for the outer wrapping process should be adaptable for various packaging materials. The adhesive should have a high initial tack and be able to be used in slot nozzle and segment application.
Wrapping of chocolate
The adhesives used for wrapping chocolate must be able to perform at very high machine speeds. They must be clean running at these speeds and capable of being applied in clean dots.
The adhesive used for diaphragm bonding must be able to adhere to different substrates such as glass and PE. It should also be compatible with the range of different foil laminates that are used. FDA approval is also needed for the adhesive since it comes into direct contact with food during this application.
Closure of bags
Bag closure is required for the packaging of free flowing material such as flour, sugar, and powders. The adhesive used has to have a high heat resistance and ability to withstand high memory forces. Usually white adhesive products are the most requested.
